Monkeywood/Macacuaba DESCRIPTION: It is very similar in appearance to Indian rosewood except the heartwood is bright red, purplish-red, or light reddish-brown, often with darker variegated red or purple streaks & fine veins; more chocolate brown with brick-red highlights (no purples, as in Indian). Occasionally we see gold-brown & very dark brown streaks. Grain is reported to be irregular & interlocked. Texture is medium & uniform. Can also be referred to as Macacauba, Coyote, Macawood & many others depending on region. Also known as Amazon Rosewood.
COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Central & South America from southern Mexico to the Brazilian amazon region.
BOTANICAL NAME: Platymiscium pinnatum
WORKING PROPERTIES: Works well with hand or machine tools. Nails, screws, glues & stains well. Finishes smoothly & takes a high polish.
USES: Cabinetry, furniture, musical instruments, flooring, turnery & other specialty items.
